Can Your Parents Still Claim You as a Dependent?

Your parents can claim you if:

  • You’re under 24 and a full-time student.

  • They provide more than half of your financial support.

  • You lived with them for more than half the year (school housing counts as living with them).

If your parents claim you, you still need to file a tax return if you had income above the filing threshold. However, you won’t be able to claim education tax credits—those go to your parents.
