Do College Students Need to File Taxes? A Simple Guide

Taxes might not be at the top of your priority list as a college student, but understanding whether you need to file can help you avoid missing out on valuable tax credits and refunds. Many students assume they don’t need to file if they have little or no income, but that’s not always the case.

When Are College Students Required to File Taxes?

You must file a tax return if any of the following apply:

  • You earned at least $13,850 (2023) from a job or self-employment.

  • You had more than $1,250 in unearned income (such as dividends, interest, or investments).

  • You had self-employment income over $400.

  • You owe special taxes (like the Affordable Care Act penalty for marketplace health insurance).

Even if you don’t meet these thresholds, you should file if:

  • You had income tax withheld from your paycheck and want a refund.

  • You qualify for tax credits (like education credits) that could lower your tax liability.
